App: The Marker (Mac)
Introduction
"The Marker" (the "App") is a Mac app for drawing rectangles, arrows, lines and text on images, covering names and other details with a mosaic, and copying or saving the result.
Through the App, the developer collects no personal information, none of the images you open, none of your annotations, and no usage data. The App does not connect to the internet.
1. Information we collect
None.
The developer does not collect or record any of the following:
- Information that identifies you, such as your name, email address, phone number or account details
- Images you open in the App, what you draw on them, or text read from them
- Names or contents of files you open or save with the App
- Location, device identifiers or advertising identifiers
- Usage data, logs, crash logs or other statistics
If you have turned on "Share with app developers" in your Mac's settings, Apple may provide diagnostic information such as crash reports to the developer. This is part of Apple's system; the App itself does not send it.
The App has no accounts and never asks you to sign in.
2. Network communication
The App does not communicate with the internet or with any server run by the developer. There is no developer server, and the App never sends data to the developer or to third parties.
3. How images are handled
- Clipboard: when you start the App or bring it to the front, it opens the image on the clipboard if there is one (at that moment it reads nothing other than images). macOS may ask whether to allow the App to read the clipboard. When you press ⌘V, the App opens the image on the clipboard or an image file copied in Finder (⌘V while typing text pastes text). When you press ⌘C, the App puts the annotated image on the clipboard.
- Files: the App reads only files you choose (Open…, drag and drop, "Open With" in Finder, or ⌘V after copying a file in Finder) and saves only where you choose in the save panel. It never overwrites the original image file. It runs inside the Mac App Sandbox and does not touch files you have not chosen.
- Drag to export: when you drag an image to another app, the App writes an image file to its own temporary folder. That file is deleted when you quit the App (or, if the App could not quit normally, the next time it starts).
- Opened images and annotations are discarded when you close the App, except for files you saved and what you put on the clipboard.
4. Redact (processed entirely on your Mac)
When you press Redact, the App reads the text in the image (Apple's Vision) and covers email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, company names and similar details with a mosaic. On Macs that support Apple Intelligence, with it turned on, the App passes the recognized text to the AI built into your Mac (Apple's Foundation Models) to find people's names.
- All of this happens on your Mac. Neither the image nor the recognized text is sent to the developer or to third parties.
- The App uses no cloud AI service and never gives the image itself to the AI.
- So that Redact is ready right away, the App reads the text in an image on your Mac when you open it. The results are used only inside the App and are not stored.
5. Permissions
The App does not request access to location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, calendars, notifications, or tracking (App Tracking Transparency).
6. Settings stored in the App
The App stores the following only on your Mac (UserDefaults). They are never sent anywhere.
- The last tool, color and line width you used
- Whether rectangles snap
7. Advertising, analytics and third parties
- The App shows no advertising and contains no advertising SDK.
- The App contains no analytics SDK and uses no third-party libraries.
- Because the developer collects no data, there is no data to share with or sell to third parties.
- The App does not track you.
8. About Redact results
Redact may not find every piece of personal information in an image, and it may cover text that is not personal information. Before sharing an image, please check for yourself that everything you want hidden is covered.
9. Children's privacy
The App is not directed at any particular age group. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.
10. Your rights
The developer collects and holds no personal data, so there is no data on the developer's side to disclose, correct or delete.
11. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, for example when features are added, this page will be updated along with the date above. Material changes to how data is handled will also be noted in the App's release notes.
